Year 1 Learning Narrative – Summer 2024

During the Summer Term we are jumping back in time to find out about how toys have changed over the years. We will find out about how the Teddy got its name and we will create stories following the journey of our own mischievous toys. We will be working with numbers all the way up to 100 and will start to move onto multiplication and division by making and sharing equal groups. After May half term we will start to look at our local environment and create leaflets about Littlehampton. We will have an exciting healthy eating week developing our DT skills and learning all about healthy foods.

To see what the children will be learning, please click here to view the Year 1 English Curriculum or here to view the Year 1 maths curriculum. Details regarding other subject lessons can be viewed in our wider curriculum progression documents.

At White Meadows Primary we use the Read Write Inc. phonics programme across both Key Stages up to Year 3. This phonics scheme provides a systematic approach to literacy, both reading and writing, which is fun and engaging. This is supplemented with the use of phonetically decodable books from Oxford Reading Tree and the Phonic Bug schemes, along with a range of other texts. Further details on how you can support your child can be found on the Read Write Inc. website.
In addition to the above programme, we also use the Big Write and Big Maths schemes and Little Big Maths in Foundation Stage.
Parents are welcome to approach class teachers to find out more about the curriculum at White Meadows. The following link gives more details of the National Curriculum.

Year 2 Learning Narrative – Summer Term 2024

Our return to school after the Easter break will bring the excitement of a brand-new topic, ‘The call of the circus, the fun of the fair.’ In English we will develop our creative writing, using our text ‘Leon and the place between’. We will be investigating the history of the circus, where we will find out about the origins of the circus and travelling fairs. In Geography, we will develop our understanding of the world around us and will learn how to use a map and a compass. In Maths, we will look at shapes and explore symmetry, using mirrors to help us. We will use our understanding of number to help us with our learning of statistics, money and measure. In our Computing lessons we will learn how to create a coding string to programme a character to move.
