Year 1 Learning Narrative – Spring Term 2025
During the Spring term we will be immersing ourselves in Julia Donaldson books, having fun with rhyming words and exciting stories. We will find out about lots of different adventures that Julia Donaldson’s characters have been on. ‘The Snail and the Whale’ book will take us on an exciting journey where we get to write postcards from all around the world. This links in well with our geography work where the children will be learning all about the continents. The children will learn a great song to help them remember the seven continents. In history we will be learning about the life of Julia Donaldson. In science we will be exploring our senses in a variety of ways. We will also be having a DT day where the children will design and create a home for a mouse from the story ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’.
To see what the children will be learning, please click here to view the Year 1 English Curriculum or here to view the Year 1 maths curriculum. Details regarding other subject lessons can be viewed in our wider curriculum progression documents. Our Music action plans for 2024-2025 can be viewed here.
At White Meadows Primary we use the Read Write Inc. phonics programme across both Key Stages up to Year 3. This phonics scheme provides a systematic approach to literacy, both reading and writing, which is fun and engaging. This is supplemented with the use of phonetically decodable books from Oxford Reading Tree and the Phonic Bug schemes, along with a range of other texts. Further details on how you can support your child can be found on the Read Write Inc. website.
In addition to the above programme, we also use the Big Write and Big Maths schemes and Little Big Maths in Foundation Stage.
Parents are welcome to approach class teachers to find out more about the curriculum at White Meadows. The following link gives more details of the National Curriculum.

Year 2 Learning Narrative – Spring Term 2025
Jump back to 1666 and discovered how the Great Fire of London unfolded and destroyed our capital city. The children will use their imaginations to envision what it would be like if they were in the Great Fire of London, and this will lead into some amazing diary writing. We will look at the differences between now and 1666 and answer the question: Why did the fire burn for so long? In Science, we will learn all about different habitats and what animals and plants need to survive. We will develop our Computing skills by creating a piece of digital music and learn how to create a code string. We will also learn how computers have evolved over time and found out about some of ways we use them in our day-to-day lives. In Maths we will build on our understanding of multiplication and division. We have also used our number knowledge to help us apply this to our learning about length, height, measure and capacity.
