English

At White Meadows Primary Academy, we aim to develop confident, fluent readers and expressive, creative writers who enjoy English. Early reading and writing are taught through the Read Write Inc. synthetic phonics programme, delivered daily from Reception to Year 2, with additional support for older pupils who need to catch up. This structured scheme helps children to decode sounds, read fluently, spell accurately, and write with confidence.

Once pupils complete Read Write Inc., they move on to whole-class comprehension lessons that build understanding, vocabulary, and enjoyment of reading. Older pupils also use Accelerated Reader to select appropriately challenging books and track their progress.

Writing is taught through the school’s Learning Journey, which includes elements of Talk for Writing, supporting children to plan, draft, and edit purposeful texts. Handwriting is developed daily using the Nelson Handwriting scheme to ensure fluency and pride in presentation.
